Kozhicode, formerly called Calicut was the traditional capital of Northern Kerala under the Samuthiri ruler. Kozhicode was the most important region of Malabar in the days gone by. Today, ancient monuments, serene beaches, historic sites, wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, hills, a unique culture and a warm, friendly ambience make Kozhicode a much sought after destination.
The busy coastal city of Kozhikode / Calicut holds an important place in the legend and history of Kerala. The place is historically famous as the Portuguese led by Vasco da Gama first landed in India, at Kappad near Kozhikode in 1498 AD. He was the first European to reach India via the sea route, around the southern cape of Africa. Later the Dutch, French and British came for trade to the shores of Calicut. Kozhikode (Calicut) was the capital of the powerful Zamorins. This ancient commercial town of Kerala still maintains its commercial traditions.

Kozhikode has an excellent local bus service system and it is cheap. Auto rickshaw is cheap way of transport between attractions. Local taxis are also available at good rates. Normally, Taxis are not needed unless you plan to go way out of the city. If you want to move around in City, Autos and Buses are good enough. There are many rental companies offering cars with drivers or self drive.
