About Gangtok
Its strategic location, a strong Buddhist presence and heady cultural offerings make the first city of Sikkim- Gangtok, a tempting insight into this stimulating land. Sensational views of Mt. Khangchendzonga….orchid nurserieas….great shopping. Gangtok is a blend of the traditional and modern, where modern concrete multi-storeyed structures clinging to the hillside stand alongside ‘chortens’ (stupas) and monasteries. Gangtok, the state capital, is a picturesque town which cascades down the mountainside from a ridge 1,520 meters high. Gangtok means the "lofty hill", but which was flattened in 1716 to build Gangtok monastery. Gangtok presents a perfect example of harmony between traditions and modernity. City of Gangtok offers a lot of trinkets and tribal handicrafts that can be bought and cherished from the streets as well as showrooms that are spread throughout the city. Gangtok has started to grow in terms of commercialization with new and more modern hotels and shopping plazas coming around.

How to reach
By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal, which is about 124 kms away and is well serviced by Indian Airlines from Calcutta and Delhi also connecting it with Guwahati. Some private airlines have also included Bagdogra in their routes.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri, 124 kms away, also in West Bengal, which is very well connected on broad gauge to Delhi, Calcutta and via these places to the rest of the country.
By Road: Excellent all weather roads maintained by the Indian Army and Border Roads connect Sikkim to gateway cities of Siliguri and Darjeeling.
